Washington Post "Faces of the Fallen"

Searchable / sortable by various criteria. Click through the "Faces" photo or name to a page presenting thumbnail bio, hometown mapping, incident details, and now and again a link to press coverage. Most all offer links to the Legacy.com Tribute webpage "In Remembrance" which presents an expanded bio or human interest item compiled from AP sources. "Guestbook" button on this page brings the visitor to a condolence book. Entries left here often convey a sense of the person taken from us and certainly the impact of the loss.

Military Times -- "Honor the Fallen"

Searchable / sortable by various criteria. Photo, thumbnail bio, incident details, generally a press item (straight AP feed citing local source) by way of expanded biography. Beyond mid-2006 the press items are rare

San Francisco Chronicle -- "Portraits of Sacrifice"

Searchable by name, not sortable. Thumbnail bio, incident details, frequently a photo, usually an expanded bio / human interest item compiled from AP sources. Like the Military Times, these diminish duing 2006.

ZEITLANGERS

Alphabetical name index retrieves fast loading home state or month/year tables displaying photo, service bio and incident details with links to expanded coverage (tables are directly accessible as well). Excellent "loving hands at home" site worthy of browsing.

Fallen Heroes Memorials

Searchable by name, sortable by various critera yielding rolls with links to entries; site search. Thumbnail bio, incident details, rarely a photo. Primarily a condolence book, Fallen Heroes Memorials is the direct expression of loved ones, family, friends, comrades, neighbors, those concerned with honoring sacrifice for our country and the occasional passerby. Far from easy reading at times, the emotional investment in doing so is well rewarded. A startingly clear picture of who the fallen hero was in life often emerges; what always emerges is the forthright expression of how dearly their lives are valued by those left behind.

Searchable by name via "site search". "List of War Dead" option offers chonological table with the basic info and a link to the individual's webpage. Individual entries always carry a press item--usually an early report from hometown sources (often broadcast media)--and almost always a photo. Comment postings under each entry elicit condolences and occasionally personal reminiscence of the fallen.

Searchable, sortable by the widest variety of criteria (click "Fatality Details" in toolbar, then "View and Query Database"). Thumbnail bio, incident details; no photos. Each entry carries reproduction of CENTCOM and DoD announcements.

Chronological roster current to previous. Links to MoD announcement with photo(s), incident details, service bio and expanded biography drawn from the service member's comrades and family. Efficiency of the site search for an individual is enhanced if the rank is included.

The young dead soldiers do not speak.

Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses: who has not heard them?

They have a silence that speaks for them at night and when the clock counts.

They say: We were young. We have died. Remember us.

They say: We have done what we could but until it is finished it is not done.

They say: We have given our lives but until it is finished no one can know what our lives gave.

They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours, they will mean what you make them.

They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say, it is you who must say this.

We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning.

We were young, they say. We have died; remember us.
